New Voices Program
iPulp is committed to the resurgence of short genre fiction and the introduction of new authors. To this end, we have put together a network of editors and manuscript readers to help us search for original stories by talented writers.
What We're Looking For
For our 2009 program we are looking for middle grade, young adult, and adult stories in these categories:
- Mystery: Classic & Whodunits
- Mystery: Noir & Hard Boiled
- Supernatural / Horror
- Sci-Fi: Society & Technological
- Sci-Fi: Space & Other Worlds
- Fantasy
- Romance / Chick Lit
- Adventure / Thriller
We will publish only a limited number of titles in each category this year, so competition will be rigorous. We are looking for professionalism in your submissions. Remember, if accepted, your stories will appear with those of award-winning authors.
Royalties
iPulp does not pay an advance. New Voices authors receive the same royalty rate as our other authors: 40%, which is paid monthly.
How It Works
First, as you would do with any publisher you submit to, familiarize yourself with the type of stories we publish and send manuscripts that fit with our existing library.
Manuscripts should be 1,500-4,500 words in length.
iPulp is a new breed of publisher dedicated to keeping our prices low. We do not employ a large group of editors to read submissions. Instead, we use a network of independent readers who screen all stories and recommend the best to iPulp for final consideration. Manuscript readers are not employees of iPulp. They charge a reading fee of $10 per manuscript. That's how they make a living. iPulp doesn't make a cent through the submission process. We don't want to make money from reading fees—we want good stories. Don't waste your money sending readers a manuscript that doesn't meet iPulp's needs.
Join a writer's group and have them evaluate your manuscript before sending it to iPulp or any publisher. Or, at least have a friend you trust give you an honest feedback.
Be sure your manuscript is properly formatted. Manuscripts that are not formatted correctly may be rejected for that reason alone. We are a digital publisher. iPulp manuscript readers and editors communicate with authors exclusively via e-mail, so you must include a valid e-mail address with your personal information. Our readers can't reply without it.
You will find a directory of manuscript readers below. Read each person's listing carefully and pay attention to what they like and which reading levels they will accept. Select the reader who is the best fit for your story.
After evaluating your manuscript, the reader will contact you with one of two e-mail messages:
- Thanks for your submission, but we cannot recommend this manuscript to iPulp...
or
- Congratulations. We are recommending your manuscript to iPulp for consideration...
Manuscripts will not be returned and readers will not provide critiques to the writers.
If your story is recommended to iPulp, you will be required to e-mail a copy of the manuscript to iPulp in MS Word, Apple Pages, or RTF format. iPulp will then consider your recommended manuscript for publication and notify you of our decision via e-mail.

Flying Fur Fiction
I want to read books suitable for teen and middle grade readers only. My favorite genres are mysteries and adventure/thrillers. I also enjoy supernatural/horror books and the occasional sci-fi story.
I particularly enjoy stories with strong characters, such as Ingrid in Down the Rabbit Hole by Peter Graham, and Symone in Geraldine McCaughrean's Printz Award winner The White Darkness.
Humor is always welcome—Dav Pilkey is one of my favorite writers, and I love non-stop action similar to Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider series, Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games, and Joseph Bruchac's Skeleton Man.
I also believe a well-developed setting is crucial—I want to be able to visualize the world in which the characters move—and I greatly appreciate an author's attention to detail when the action falls within a specific time period. Laurie Halse Anderson's Chains set in revolutionary America, the samurai mysteries by the Hooblers, and Orson Scott Card's futuristic world in Ender's Game are just a few books that successfully transported me to another time and place. Other favorite authors of mine are M.T. Anderson, Jerry Spinelli, David Almond, Avi, Neil Gaiman, Walter Dean Myers, Gordon Korman, Robert Cormier, and Kate DiCamillo.
