Newsstand

The Newsstand is the place to browse titles. iPulp is family friendly. Users are categorized by reading levels:

  • A (Adult:18 and older)
  • YA (Young Adult: 13-17)
  • MG (Middle Grade: 9-12)
  • J (Juvenile: Under 9)

The titles available in the Newsstand and your Personal Library are filtered by the reading level of the user who's logged in.

REMEMBER: Reading levels only indicate the minimum age range to which a story is appropriate. Adults would enjoy reading many of the MG and YA titles. For instance, the first Harry Potter was an MG read but had a huge adult readership.

Let's explore the Newsstand by sections.

  1. The top shelf has three areas of interest.

This area displays featured titles. Click on a cover to read the title's Jacket Notes (see below). If you have purchased one of these titles for your library, that space will be empty.

This shelf remains constant as you search and sort the titles in the Newsstand.

  2. The bottom two shelves display the entire iPulp catalog, 10 titles at a time. Titles are displayed by publication date (newest first), unless you sort or search the shelves using the Newsstand navigation buttons. (See #4)

Click on a cover to read the title's Jacket Notes. Titles that have been purchased and moved to your library will not display in the Newsstand, so there is no need to worry about double purchasing a title.

  3. Your basic navigation buttons are located here. Use these buttons to move between the Newsstand, your Personal Library, and the Periodicals room. At times there may also be a special destination button.

  4. Your Newsstand navigation buttons allow you to sort and search the Newsstand and sequentially scroll through the shelves. The number of shelves is shown in the display between the scroll-arrow buttons.

After performing a sort or search, you can use the Clear Search button to restore the shelves to their default setting, displaying all the books currently in the Newsstand.

  5. Specialty navigation buttons provide access to several auxiliary pages.

The Administration button will appear when the the account administrator is logged in. It provides access to the administration page where you can name your Personal Library, add up to four additonal users, and purchase iPulp tokens. The administrator must be 18 and have a valid credit card or PayPal account to purchase tokens. Minors will have to ask a parent to purchase tokens for them.

The Community page allows ou to connect with other iPulp readers on Facebook and GoodReads.com, write and share your own stories in our Writer's Gallery, and contact iPulp.

Help is where you'll find... well, help.

Jacket Notes

When you click on a cover of a title in the Newsstand, you will go to the Jacket Notes for the title selected. This is the place to read a brief description of the story and to purchase the story for your Personal Library. Let's take a closer look at the Jacket Notes screen.

  1. The full-sized cover will display here.

  2. This area will give you a brief description of the story plus the story's reading level, genre, and price. Prices range from FREE to $1.

  3. When you finish reading the Jacket Notes, you can click this button to put the title back on the shelf and return to the Newsstand.

  4. The Account Balance display lets you know how much credit is in your token account.

  5. If you have enough credit in your token account, the Purchase button will appear. When you roll the cursor over the Purchase button, the correct number of tokens will appear above the coin slot. Click the Purchase button to buy the title. NOTE: Tokens are purchased on the Account Admin screen through a secure PayPal™ connection. It's safe for young readers to purchase titles because no financial data is transmitted when a title is purchased from the Newsstand.

If you don't have enough credit in your token account, a Wish List button will appear instead of the Purchase button. If you click the Wish List button, the title will be sent to the account administrator, who can then buy the titles from a wish list on the Account Admin screen after new tokens have been purchased.

Personal Library

After you purchase titles from the Newsstand, they are moved to your Personal Library. All users on the account share this library. However, the titles are filtered by the reading level of the user who is logged in.

  1. The name of your library is set on the Account Admin screen.

  2. All three shelves display titles you or other account users have purcahsed. Titles are displayed by the date purchased (most recent first). So, if you just made a purchase from the Newsstand, that title will be the first one on the shelf unless you sort or search your library.

Click on a cover to open a story and begin reading.

  3. These basic navigation buttons function the same as on the Newsstand.

  4. These are your Library navigation buttons. They have the same functionality as the buttons on the Newsstand.

  5. The specialty navigation buttons provide access to several auxiliary pages as they did on the Newsstand.

Story Reader

When you click a cover on your Personal Library shelf, the story will open in a Flash-based reader that gives you a real-world reading experience.

  1. Unlike e-book readers, iPulp presents stories with the look and feel of a hardcover book: two-page spreads with 6" x 9" pages, large type, and generous line spacing—and the pages flip just like a real book. Because of the quality of the reading experience, a minimum screen resolution is required (1024 X 768). You should also maximize the screen space that can be used by your browser. (See Maximizing Your Screen Space below.)

Pages can be flipped by clicking and dragging a page corner, using the mouse scroll wheel, or by clicking the left and right pointer buttons on the navigation bar below the book.

  2. This navigation bar allows you to jump to chapter breaks and flip pages. The Return to Shelf button will take you back to your Personal Library.

CLICK HERE to view a sample story.

The name of your personal library is also set here.

  4. You can add four additional users to an account. Each user has an assigned reading level, which means the Newsstand and Personal Library are filtered to age-appropriate titles. If more than four other people need to have access to this library, you can set up generic user logins based upon reading level. Purchasing and administrative rights can be assigned or restricted to each user login

  5. An iPulp account can be accessed by a total of four devices. Each browser is considered a device. So, if you access the site though IE and FireFox on the same computer, that counts as two devices. (NOTE: Browsers must accept cookies.) The same is true of unique logins on the same computer. Devices are authorized the first time you access your iPulp account on a new device. Be sure to give your device a descriptive name, such as: Jane's Workstation, or John's iPhone. Users who have administration rights can swap out authorized devices when logging into a new device even if four devices have already been authorized.

When authorizing and iPhone or iPod Touch, we recommend checking the "Remember Me" button to prevent having to type your login and password every time.

Maximizing Your Screen Space

iPulpFiction.com is designed with new computer and web standards in mind. iPulp is a media-rich, full-screen web app that requires:

  • a high-speed Internet connection
  • a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768
  • an up-to-date version of your favorite browser –
IE 7+, Firefox 3+, and Safari
  • Flash Player 8+

Flash logo

If your computer has a screen resolution greater than
1024 x 768, just resizing your browser will give you enough screen space to fully enjoy iPulp. If your screen size is 1024 x 768, you should do the following:

PCs

If you are viewing iPulp through either Internet Explorer or Firefox, maximizing your screen is easy. Use the F11 key to toggle between full-screen and normal viewing mode. When you are in full-screen mode, your top toolbars will hide themselves. Simply move your cursor to the top of the screen to make the toolbars reappear.

Macs (and Safari on a PC)

Safari and FireFox on the Mac don't have the F11 full-screen function. To maximize the available screen space, go to the browser's VIEW menu and hide as many toolbars as needed. Then, resize your browser window manually.
